There are many images of unfamiliar foreign countries look magnificent no matter how the photograph is taken.
It's because the curious scenery stimulates imagination.
Things that are not visible are imagined and it seems as if even more spectacular things are hidden in the picture.
To find those unseen and invisible things, I embarked on a long journey in 2003.
I’d like to tell you about special days during my staying in London that my whole life, dreamed of staying.

낯선 외국의 풍경은 어떻게 찍어도 대략 멋지게 보일 때가 많다.
처음 보는 신기한 풍경이 상상력을 자극하기 때문이다.
보이지 않는 부분조차 머릿속에 그려지면서 보다 훨씬 더 근사한 것들이 그 속에 숨어 있을 것처럼 여겨진다.
나는 그 보이지 않던 부분을 탐사하려 2003년 긴 여정의 출발선에 섰다.

It was raining in London where I arrived after a long flight, the famous London sky was full of dark clouds, but even with my tired body and the wet rain, I enjoyed the city as a stranger until dark.

한참을 날아 도착한 런던에는 비가 내리고 있었고, 명성 높은 런던 하늘은 잔뜩 먹구름 한 가득 이고 극도로 피곤한 몸과 추적거리는 비속에서도 나는 하늘이 어두워 질 때까지 이방인이 되어 도시를 즐겼다.

When asked “Is London nice?”, I delightfully say “Yes, it’s nice”.
When I give reasons for why London is nice, I perhaps give all the typical reasons.
But I still like London.
The autumn in London where loneliness swept me.
The winter in London where darkness filled the city exactly at 3:35.
And even the rain that starts to fall after such unpredictable weather…

런던,

‘런던 좋아요?’ 라고 물었을 때 ‘네 좋아요’ 라고 늘 흔쾌 하게 대답한다.
런던이 왜 좋은지 이유를 대자면 또 참 흔한 대답을 늘어 놓을 지도 모르겠다,
그래도 나는 런던이 좋다.
외로움에 몸둘 바 모르겠던 런던의 가을
오후 3시 35분이 되면 어김없이 어두워져 버리는 런던의 겨울
이 변덕스러운 날씨 끝에 내리는 비 조차도..

Oddly, at times I wished to go back home and drown in my thoughts in familiar space but I think it was because a feeling of nostalgia came over me.
It seemed like the gloominess of the rainy days would not end, but at times, the hot sun shined down on the city.
When the sun comes out, people came out for walks and strolls to nearby parks and squares as if they had found an oasis, and on such days, I was also elated.
On the bright sunny day I walked with a friend with a sandwich in my bag, Beatles’s romantic music could be heard like an auditory hallucination.
Maybe it is because of the weather, but London that seemed to have two faces was dark yet bright, and solemn yet lively.

엉뚱하게도, 집으로 돌아가 익숙한 공간 속에 다시 잠기고 싶다는 생각을 가끔 하기도 했는데 아마도 향수병이라는 그리움의 감정이 나에게 찾아왔기 때문이었던 것 같다. 비가 많은 나라의 우울함은 끝이 나지 않을 것 같았지만 어느 날엔가는 강한 태양빛을 쏟아내기도 했다. 사람들은 태양이 내리쬐면 오아시스를 만난 듯이 공원과 광장 주변으로 산책을 나왔고 그런 날에는 나도 덩달아 신이 났다. 친구와 함께 샌드위치를 가방에 쑤셔 넣고 걸었던 어느 맑은 날에는 가만히 서 있어도 비틀즈의 낭만적인 음악이 환청처럼 들려오기도 했다. 날씨 탓이었는지 두 개의 얼굴을 가진 것처럼 보인 런던은 어둡고도 밝았으며 무겁고도 경쾌했다

The city of London is a familiar yet still unfamiliar place to me.
Four years since I arrived in London. I am still not at ease with the word “Londoner”.
It’s about time I get used to it, but why London is still unfamiliar to me? I ask myself.

나에게 런던이란 도시는 익숙하면서도 여전히 낯선 곳이다. 이곳에서 지낸 지 이제 4년. '런더너'란 말도 아직은 어색하다. 이 정도 시간이 되었으면 익숙해질 만 한데, 왜 런던이라는 도시는 여전히 나한테 낯설지?" 하고 나에게 되묻는다.

Doris Lessing, the author of “London Observed” sketched the city of London, a city that is remembered as just a beautiful city. She observed London more deeply for a long time as an outsider, and at times with detail, and at times with a warm heart, she talks about the people and sketches an image of the lifestyle in London.

Each short story is just like the short stories of our lives, and in these story, I suddenly feel that life is the same where ever we live, whether in London, or elsewhere.

그저 아름다운 도시로 기억 되는 런던을 “London Observed의” 작가 Doris Lessing은 좀더 깊이 오랫동안 주변인으로서 런던을 관찰하며, 때론 섬세하게, 때론 따뜻한 시선으로 그 속에 살고 있는 인간들의 생태와 삶의 모습을 이야기 하고 스케치 해 나간다. 각각의 단편은 우리 삶의 단편 그대로 이고, 런던 속에 살든 어디에 살든 그 속에 사는 삶의 모습들은 별 차이가 없다는 걸 새삼 느낀다.

Suddenly I felt comfortable as if I’m at home. That was moment when I fell in love with London and the moment I felt that London had fallen in love with me.

FLASH MX publish setting

I was struggling to export .fla file to .mov file.
Some fla files are fine to convert to mov file but if there are
complex action script contained it wouldn't.
I even though about making moving image again by using After Efect.
Maybe I can capture these moving image anf save them to mov files?
I tested that and it seems work.

Here is the plan I want to show my project.
I wanted to use rear screen for the show however it is not only to find out but
make more complex unless I can use big space.

The things I need to figure out are.

Projector
There would be an interrution between viewer and projection If I put the projector under the chair. It is depends on whether my place is narrow enogh to hang a screen and a projector on each side.
But I think most of student would be the same situation and want the place like me. I may put a projector in middle of the chaire like arm.

Sound
I prefer to play sound directly to the view but it also need to be concerned the show's atmospere. playing music without using headphone would make noise and people even hardly hear the sound.

The Khronos Projector is an interactive-art installation allowing people to explore pre-recorded movie content in an entirely new way. A classic video-tape allows a simple control of the reproducing process (stop, backward, forward, and elementary control on the reproduction speed). Modern digital players add little more than the possibility to perform random temporal jumps between image frames.

The goal of the Khronos Projector is to go beyond these forms of exclusive temporal control, by giving the user an entirely new dimension to play with: by touching the projection screen, the user is able to send parts of the image forward or backwards in time. By actually touching a deformable projection screen, shaking it or curling it, separate "islands of time" as well as "temporal waves" are created within the visible frame. This is done by interactively reshaping a two-dimensional spatio-temporal surface that "cuts" the spatio-temporal volume of data generated by a movie.

Often wonder who I am and where my country is and where do I belong and why was I ever born at all.
Everyone who has ever lived in the foreign city for any prolonged length of time has their own Story, and here’s mine:

The London’s weather I never had direct experience but informed from only books made my first stage of London’s impress decreased although I wished it would be only great and happy. But I had to do something. I passed a pedestrian crossing which gets wet in the rain, went the one of famous Tower Bridge, and drank coffee in a café. Blond hair children were walking with their mother after school, double-decked buses were coming and going busily. Then one day I felt I am a outsider for the first time while people walking me pass in one rainy after noon. It was something fresh but lonely on the other side.

Still London is not familiar sometime. It has been 4years I have lived in London. It is yet awkward the word Londoner to me. It were not one or two times I want to pack my all the stuffs and return back to Korea when I relapsed into homesick. I asked the reson to friend of mine. ‘It seems time enough to be used to living here but why is that sill I feel the gap?”

After change the style of main charactor and type of motion, I can spend a lot on image composition. Compared to frame by frame animation this composition of still drawn images with landscape shows depth of screen and reallity of the story.It aosl tells harmony and didharmony at a time consequently it is matched with the story : charactor as a insider and outsider.
From the presentation, I got several good ideas from Andy and class mates which would be better.There could be diferent charactor each five different episod playing thier own story also can be recorded by foreign languges.

Storytelling tends to give way to the careful observation of mental process and the effect on the human psyche.
Story telling is very interesting to the viewers as they are able to somehow experience life events such as happiness, sorrow and so on with no fear of pain or being harmed.

It's been said that an image worth 1,000 words and there are a lot of visual languages more than we imagine.

Digital arts are the medium that is rapidly growing and showing all over the mass-media.

MTV, advertising, TV, film, fine art and so on.

I found some of very interesting chronological generation topic.
Cave drawings were first made about 30,000 years ago.
The first recorded writing was in Sumeria about 5,500 years ago.
Gutenberg's printing press was invented about 500 years ago.
Photographic inventions were introduced about 150 years ago.
The desktop computer was invented about 20 years ago.
And the World Wide Web was introduced about 10 years ago.

As we are seeing the figure above, we simply have not had enough time to discover and evaluate the social impact of this technology.

However it is clear that as a communication language, Digital Arts have more than power to hold us like a black hole that no one can not escape from.

How communication can occur through the visual medium
Due to this is a vital to all aspects of imaginary artwork I exploreed examples of the sophistication and purpose of a visual narrative from traditional Illustration to present day interpretations.
I am always charmed with fantasy and dreamlike illustration and animation which lead people to an imaginary world while they are observing.
I also found the beauty of combination between traditional tools and computer software is irresistible.

Yugo Nakamura is one of Japan's leading web designers, who is getting recognized more and more from around the world. He has just won the Grand Prix of Cyber Lion at the 51st annual Cannes Lions Festival. The Shift cover design for this month is a clay animation piece by him! He always surprises us with his unique ideas as well as his distinguished programming skills. Where do the ideas come from? We seek the answer, by asking him about the background story of his projects.

First, could you introduce yourself?

Yugo nakamura. I live in Tokyo. I'm involved in a variety of projects on the web as a director, designer, engineer, and coder. In short, I do anything.

What are you doing recently?

As always, I'm involved in interface design here and there. Recently, I've got an interest in animation again so I started making it as well.

Congratulation for the Grand Prix of Cyber Lions of Cannes Lions with "NEC Ecotonoha".

Thank you. I'm very happy.

Are you satisfied with this project?

Of course I'm happy to win such a prestigious prize but the best thing was that I was able to receive some very interesting reactions from various users. For me, it was very interesting that Ecotonoha was utilized as we expected, but that some unexpected reactions also came out.

Could you tell me the concept of the project and the points of importance?

- A shape is formed by a group of people unexpectedly, and with fun. It's a system where people enjoy the connection and the difference.
- It's a stage to keep an entirely positive atmosphere. It's a community orientation lead by a "shape".
- Rythmn with which the web site works. Designing the time. A leaf can appear by a person each day. Habitualization as a daily task. It's the design within the time at regular intervals, which can't be realized with other media such as TV.
- To solve all the factors from the presentation of the entire concept to the details of "How to use" with one interface. To keep it strictly "simple". To build a simple interaction with various facets.

Could you introduce the projects which you have done recently?

Intentionallies
It's a portfolio site of an architect design office "Intentionallies". Super linear construction. Flexible interface with card metaphoring.

Nike Art of Speed
I contributed some artwork for the compilation DVD. It's an interactive illustration taking relativity of "speed" as the theme.

Mindsphere
It's a web site visualizing the activity on the internet with focus on the blog. It's the object connected with Aggregator.

Context Viewer for "Kanshin Kukan (Interest Space)"
It's a visual browser which visualizes the context within registered "keywords" in Japanese pioneering contextual community "Kanshin Kukan" service. It's still under construction but its beta version is now running.

Could you tell me your favourite project/web site which you have done so far?

Sony - Camcamtime
(This project has alreay closed but you can see the slide show demo from the above link) It's a visual clock on the web which is generated from video contribution from users. I was losing my way not having the idea "what the design is" at that time but this project gave me an opportunity to find how to be with "my" design.

What do you care for the most when you work for a (cooperate) site?

To have a dialogue. I usually seek new motivation within a certain restriction so the dialogue is very important to me. Opportunities for various ideas come from casual dialogue.

Your web site always surprise us with not only the flash/programme skills but also your unique ideas. Where do you get such inspiration?

While at work, I find it out while I'm moving my hands. I treasure a flash which hits me while at work or a shape which appears accidentally because of a bug. It won't be an interesting thing if every plan in my head is realized as scheduled. In a way, it's "luck".

Tell me the web designer/site which you are watching recently?

There are too much to pick one but I'm a big fan of Hooger Brudge from a long time ago. I like everything from their idea to its details. I want to create such non-logical simple "fan".

What's your future vision?

I want to make my own web site better. I'm always to busy, so my web site hasn't been touched for almost two years. It's so sad. I'm thinking to force myself to update it before this article is on Shift but I'm not sure how it would be... I want to create and mess the web site up just as I like and feel.

The desktop computer has transformed the design profoundly over the past 25 years. Distinct stages of evolution are marked by points at which the once quaint profession of commercial art, or graphic design, has grown into something more complex, as the designer has expanded into new skill sets and areas of creative practice. The eighties saw many print production processes, such as page layout, typesetting, and mechanical preparation, move from the domain of specialists working in these areas and onto the desktop of the designer’s workplace. In the early nineties, an explosion of typeface design was the result of consumer access to technology : PostScript language and software for creating and modifying typefaces reached the designer’s hands. By the mid-nineties, the designer gained access to the tools for creating and producing Web sites and moving type. We are now in the midst of new wave commonly referred to as motion graphics, or motion design.

Behind this new wave lies yet another technological evolution. Design studio now have access to highly advanced yet affordable hardware and software literally on their desktop. Both 2-D and 3-D animation and video production are now possible “in-house,” rather than in specialized- and expensive-shops. The tool of the trade include digital and film still and motion cameras with software such as SOFTIMAGE XSI, Flame/Combustion by Discreet, Maya by Alias/Wavefront, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects. Film formats such as MPEG3 and MPEG4, QuickTime, and others allow for efficient editing, production, and delivery of finished sequences.

Motion Graphic Design for Visual Communication
This paper refers to the proposal to find a new design pattern or interpretation in visual communication on the basis of storytelling structure.

1. Aims
Story telling enables people to experience life events from happiness to sorrow without fear of being harmed by the simulated events. As we watch digital media, we see that many visual styles of storytelling are intended to appeal the audience. These motion graphics and illustrations bring the screen alive, delivering information and entertaining viewers. Digital media technology allows people to create more activity than ever. However, people feel nostalgic for analogues such as physical artwork and tools to engage them in the narrative. I want to use digital medium in a way that gives people the same physical engagement as analogue by exploring examples of the sophistication and purpose of visual narrative from traditional movement to present day interpretations. I will outline project explores uncharted territory in digital narratives and animation, and evokes novel concepts in performance traditions and audience participation.

2. Objectives
Dreamlike illustration and fantastic animation lead people to an imaginary world. Combining traditional tools and computer software is irresistible.
This project will be the time-based communications work that utilizes motion to explore narrative story telling. The study of the following areas will address the factors that create a framework to evoke novel concepts in performance traditions and audience participation.
: The understanding interface in multimedia, immersion in visual media through visuals and storytelling, and narrative techniques for digital artists.

I will explore the following issues:
-The relationship between narrative and storytelling
-Narrative theme, motion, sound and typography as part of visual language.
-Korean puppetry as a traditional visual language compared to digital medium.
-Structure and entertainment through ‘Agency’ in the book, Hamlet on the Holodeck by Janet Murray

3. Rationale
There are many styles to create animation: Traditional ‘Cell animation’, ‘Stop motion animation’, ‘3D animation and ‘Drawing animation.’ This project will employ drawn images combining both analogue and digital technology. Moreover, this project will employ puppets, which are inanimate object modeling very simple objects to highly sophisticated artifacts. A puppet can be operated directly by the use of strings or sticks. I found that puppets possess the same aspects as images. Once they get involved with strings or digital tools they become animated from inanimate object. Combining analogue such as puppet artifact with digital tools to give them life would bring a new experience to audiences.

Many people harbor preconceived ideas about animation as a medium suitable only for humor and children’s entertainment. However, there are many examples of animation as a serious political statement and now animation has been recognized as an imaginary illusion.
Storytelling pertains to the use of different techniques to perform and relay stories for purposes such as education, advertising, and entertainment. (Albania, P, 2004, ‘On the fringe’, Broadcasting & Cable, vol. 134, no. 49, p. 13.)
Due to the rise of technology and multi-media, storytelling has evolved, increasing the opportunities for people to tell their own stories. Moreover, the use of technology also allowed wide-spread distribution of these stories, producing a bigger audience.

Hamlet on the Holodeck by J. Murray predicts that the future of narrative structure will develop via computer digital technology. The book focuses on ‘What is story telling’ and Murray defines narrative as giving a context in which we can explore.
Whereas stories were initially verbal, they have evolved into today’s languages of the digital age. Digital media can now combine images, sound and text so that it can be called multi-media. The role of story telling is still important for the widely developing digital media technology.

4. Outcomes
This project will be animated with drawn image and then combine analogue and digital technology to bring a new experience to audiences.
-To demonstrate Motion graphics & AV production (a short video film) I need to install a multimedia set.
-The degree show will require a DVD Player and TV monitor or computer set, as well as speakers for playing sounds. It automatically generates a short animation on the computer screen.

5. Media
For my project to be successful I need to understand the latest design software. This project will employ software to manipulate pictures, graphics and typography and then animate them actively in 3D space. I am primarily working with the following packages: Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash. I will also need to look at After Effects and Premiere Pro.

6. Methodologies
To obtain the views of the storytelling motion graphics, the experimental research method will be used. The sample will be televised digital media, game, advertisement, drama and short film.
-I will amass a highly idiosyncratic body of work and take it from a two dimensional platform with specific motion graphics effects.
-I will make an animation film by combining digital technology with analogue to present traditional movement.

7. Risk assessment
As I am planning to install a TV set or Computer set with sound equipment, creating the slight risk of an accidental fall. I will employ all necessary precautions to preclude such a possibility.
-I will double-check before the presentation so that technical problems are rare.
-The facilities will be protected during the show time.

an encounter with a Motion Graphic

[Motion graphic energy that turn, spread itself and wind in and out]

As we watch TV commercials, we can see many abstract and visual styles are intended to appeal the viewer. These 2D, 3D motion graphics and illustrations are the elements that brings the screen alive. I think they play an indispensable role of delivering the information cleary and also hooking the user.

I found one famous motion graphics company that is based in LA and I looked into their TV commercial work. Although I am watching these mothion graphics more and more each day, I always give them just praise rather than just analysing to see how it was made.

Everlasting Journey : TV Land
I cannot hold back the admiration for this graphic animation which turns right and left so dramatically. All the contents include design concept, storyboard, sounds and script was directed by Sonia Lamb, a creative director from England. According to an interview with Sonia, this visual style combines hundreds of layers and its whole length is about 1.5m.
The thing I liked most about this art work is the smooth composition of each layer that includes pictures, graphics and typography and then animates them actively in 3D space.

Review_Hamlet on the holodeck

I've just finished reading the book J murray’s ‘Hamlet on the Holodeck’ : the future of narrative in cyber space.

As this is introduced as a narration guide for Game, Cyber drama storyteller and New media reviewer This is telling that the future of narration structure will not change on the one hand, but interactively via computer digital technology. I’m not sure that I have fully understood this book due to the unexpected amount of text with no diagrams and also containing too many technical terms so that I kept jumping from the book to a dictionary. However, I was interested in storytelling and this book focuses on ‘What is story telling’ and Murray wants to define narrative as giving a context in which we can explore.

In the beginning written stories were just text, but this evolved into todays hyper-text languages of the digital age. Digital media can now combine visual, sound and text so that it can be multi-media. Digital media can also interact with people as it has a non-linear structure with the appropriate tools to connect them. I think the role of story telling is still important for the widely developing digital media technology.

His final comments make me think a lot. That the idea is natural common sense. But, at the same time we frequently forget its significants.

What is Animation?

Animation is possibly the most important creative form of this century.
By definition animation is an art, approach, aesthetic and application
that involves many aspects of visual culture, such as, feature length
films, television, and web cartoons to display a function. In short, ‘
animation is everywhere’ (Paul wells 2002:1).

Then, what is animation?
To animate, and the related words animation, animated, and
animator all derive from the Latin verb, animare that means ‘to give
life to’. Within the context of animated film, this largely means
“the artificial creation of illusion of movement in inanimate line and
forms” (Paul Wells, 2000:10).
The Oxford Dictionary defines animation as, “the technique of filming
successive drawing or position of puppets or models to create an
illusion of movement when the film is shown as sequence”.
People have been interested in creating that illusion of motion for
a long time.
Whether we perceive twelve progressing positions of a bird in flight
by flipping through a flip book, watching Mickey Mouse run across
the movie screen, seeing a face metamorphose, or viewing stars
floating in the night we are essentially encountering the result of rapidly
changing sequential still images. Animation is achieved by the way
we perceive a series of images.

Many people have preconceived ideas about animation as a
whimsical medium suitable only for humour and children’s
entertainment. However, there are many examples of animation as
serious political statement. Halas and Batchelor produced Animal
Farm in 1954, as an adaptation of George Orwell’s novel.
Scholars have often studied it as an allegory about the rise of Stalinism
and the threat of communism,animation can be used seriously
and to devastating effect.

Market Potential

_Entertainment
Animated cartoons, television specials, and feature films are
produced for entertainment.
In addition, both cartoon and graphic animation are used for titles
and credits in both television programmes and feature films.

Conclusion

Animation is a medium that cannot thrive without innovation.
The tools used in the creation of each frame are constantly changing.
Although cell animation still dominates the industry,
other animation techniques are becoming increasingly popular.
The animation techniques and knowledge gained in the last century
can be applied to computer animation.
Good knowledge of what has been achieved in the past will be very
valuable to animators who want to be a part of the future .
Furthermore, the scope of this medium is expanding to include
other activities. In fact, it is now being used wherever visual
communication is required. In particular, the animation industry
focuses on commercial activities. The three major applications of
commercial animation are entertainment, education, and television
advertising. For over a hundred years now, animation has amused
and entertained us through jokes and stories.
It has done many other things as well.
Educational films have used animation to promote concepts;
advertising commercials have used it to sell us everything
on various occasions. Propaganda films have turned to animation
to help promote political ideas and keep up morale.

Time-based communication work describes image that moves and where the movement has a narrative story.
Question about,’ How I can go beyond the page, into sequencing and revealing information both for structure and for entertainment?’ will be the main focus of my project. Motion graphic offers viewer another layer, another form to a normally two-dimensional communications medium."

Introduction

Storytelling pertains to the use of different techniques or methodologies to develop perform and relay stories. This activity can also be used for different purposes such as education, advertising, entertainment and many others.
However, due to the rise of technology and Digital media, storytelling has gone through major development, increasing the opportunities for people to tell their own stories. In addition, with the presence and accessibility of the Internet, stories developed by various enterprises are easily distributed at a global level.
Moreover, the use of technology also allowed wide spread distribution of these stories, resulting to a bigger audience.
This development then gave rise to what is now called as digital storytelling.Digital storytelling employs the non-linear principle where the audience or viewers become the co-tellers or participants who determine how the story plot will develop; this story development on the other hand is guided by the storyteller or narrator.
Compared to linear stories, digital storytelling does not impose to the viewers a predetermined plot and story ending.
There had been several reasons why viewers are attracted to non-linear storytelling. One article explained the ability of digital storytelling to appeal to the general masses by comparing it with traditional storytelling.
Traditional storytelling generally follows a linear plot where readers would have to read through the storyline to understand it; in other words, the story only has a single plot and a single ending. This feature makes digital storytelling distinct as it involves multiple plots and multiple routes towards the ending.
By giving the reader the control on how the story would end, interest and entertainment value increase (TV Meets the Web 2002).Several companies had realized how this visual communication strategy can promote effective public communication; thus, a number of major and global companies are developing communication strategies patterned after this technique.
This research will then attempt to investigate how does interactive storytelling facilitates public communication as well as how does this technique impact the consumers.

Rationale

The attention and interest of the consumers on the messages relayed by companies is an essential key towards effective communication and business success.
The use of interactive storytelling enables firms to access a communication channel that could easily relay their messages towards the consumers.
Not only will businesses be able to achieve cost-effective marketing strategy but this will also help firms acquire a larger audience with less effort. Allowing the viewers or consumers to participate in the communication process can also promote retention. On the other hand, the use of interactive storytelling for public communication also has benefits to the consumers.
Aside from the entertainment factor, the provision of control to the consumers through interactive storytelling could promote learning and relationship-building.If interactive storytelling does help in making public information more interesting based on the perspectives of the consumers or viewers, businesses can then make use of this computer-based marketing tool to enhance public communication.
While there are studies describing various programs or systems that enable interactive storytelling as well as case studies describing companies that had used this strategy, there had been limited studies that investigate whether this tool is appealing to the consumers.

Research Questions

This proposed study will attempt to answer the following queries:
1. What is the general view of the consumers towards interactive storytelling as compared to the linear method of public communication?
2. Was digital storytelling able to interest the consumers?
3. Based on the views of the consumers, what specific advantages or disadvantages can be encountered with digital storytelling?

Background

Digital storytelling and its use as a public communication technique by various firms has long been employed. I
n the research done by Björk (2004), several global companies were able to use interactive storytelling for public communication purposes. Some of these companies include Ford, Nike and Calvin Klein. Generally, the companies’ aim for using interactive storytelling for business is to reach out to the consumers more for effective marketing of their products.
The outcome of these efforts suggested that interactive storytelling was able to successfully communicate with the public as effective consumer-company relations were established. In the case of Calvin Klein for example, the company developed fictional characters where young consumers can send in an e-mail as if the characters are acquaintances or friends.
Through this strategy, the company was able to market its product and reach out to young target groups.Television network companies have also been using interactive storytelling in order to achieve viewer interest and loyalty. At present, a wide array of televised interactive shows are available to the consumers including pay per view, integrated shopping or chatting, polls as well as interactive drama programs (Rusch 2004).
Interactive storytelling through television programs also has similar features as with advertisements; in addition, these programs also elicit the same effect to the viewers. Specifically, Laurel (1986) noted that interactive dramas for example allow viewers to feel for the characters and make themselves part of the story. This is very interesting to the viewers as they are able to somehow experience life events with no fear of pain or being harmed; Interactive storytelling in public communication is then engaging as the participant or user can actively make choices and influence story outcomes.

Methodology

In order to obtain the views of the consumers towards interactive storytelling, the experimental research method will be used.
For the participants, consumers from a single mall will be randomly selected to participate in the research process. The sample will then be subjected to two types of televised media: an interactive advertisement and interactive drama.
For the purposes of comparison, the sample will be subjected to traditional and interactive modes of public communication. After the traditional advertisement and drama, viewers will be given a questionnaire which will basically ask questions to determine their interest level towards the communication strategy used; the same process will also be done after the interactive medium sessions.
The questionnaire will be structured in Likert format to make answering easier for the participants. Selected viewers will also be interviewed in order to obtain more information, including the specific advantages and disadvantages of using either communication modes.
An interview schedule will be developed in order to facilitate the interview procedure. In order to process the data provided by the respondents, survey results will be analyzed through descriptive statistics. Interview findings will be incorporated to support survey outcomes.
As this procedure will require the participation of the human respondents, due ethical procedures related to research will be employed, including securing their permission and consent to take part in the research.
